Case IH and New Holland are both CNH brands, so the factory Case IH diagnostic software and New Holland diagnostic software are the same program: the CNH Electronic Service Tool, or EST. Dealers use the full version. Owners can now buy a customer version through CNH’s online store.

This guide covers both versions, CNH’s prices (checked October 2026), the adapter, the port, the sister models and the aftermarket alternatives.

What the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) is

EST is Windows software. It runs on a laptop and talks to the tractor’s controllers over the CAN network through a protocol adapter. Case IH and New Holland describe it in almost the same words, and CNH’s store sells the same EST license (item SRV01) on both brand pages.

There are two sides to it:

Case IH diagnostic software for owners: dealer EST vs customer EST (2026)

The Case IH self-repair page and the New Holland EST page (checked October 2026) list these customer EST functions:

Software programming and calibrations are not on that list. If a repair needs new controller software or a calibration, plan on the dealer doing that step. CNH states its position plainly: it supports your right to repair, but not modification.

What it costs (CNH store, October 2026)

Prices from the CNH store’s self-repair section:

Some smaller CNH machines use Yanmar, ISM, Perkins or LS Mtron engines. For those, the store sells separate engine diagnostic tools at US$400 to US$1,200 each (October 2026), and every one of them requires an active EST license.

Right-to-repair background

On March 9, 2023, CNH and the American Farm Bureau Federation announced a memorandum of understanding. CNH committed to give farmers and independent shops access to Case IH and New Holland tools, software and manuals “per subscription or sale” on fair and reasonable terms. CNH is not required to share information that would override safety features or emissions controls, or adjust engine power levels.

The adapter: CNH’s VCI kit and the DPA5

CNH’s store sells the hardware as the CNH VCI EST Adaptor Cable (item SRV12): a protocol adapter plus two harnesses to connect to the machine’s CAN network. It needs a current EST license, sold separately. The store does not name the adapter’s model.

Many used and reseller kits are built around the DG Technologies DPA5, a heavy-duty RP1210/J2534 adapter with USB and Bluetooth. If you are offered one second-hand, ask your dealer whether it suits your EST version before you pay for it.

The adapter page lists the PC you need (October 2026):

The brand pages still say Windows 10 only, so confirm with your dealer before you rely on Windows 11.

Case IH and New Holland sister tractors

Several Case IH and New Holland tractors share their engineering or come off the same assembly lines. For diagnostics, that means the same EST covers both badges, and a sister model’s service information is a useful cross-check. Always order parts and software by your own serial number.

Case IH New Holland What is shared
Puma 150 to Puma 240 T7 (all models except the T7.175, at the 2015 T7 launch) Matching engine outputs and transmission options. New Holland model numbers use maximum boosted power, so the T7 number reads higher than its Puma equivalent.
Magnum T8 Both assembled at CNH’s plant in Racine, Wisconsin.
Steiger T9 Both articulated 4WD lines assembled in Fargo, North Dakota.

If your series is not in the table, ask your dealer whether it has a sister model before you assume anything.

The diagnostic port on CNH tractors

The standard off-board connector for a J1939 CAN network is the round 9-pin Deutsch plug defined in SAE J1939-13. Many Case IH and New Holland machines have a 9-pin socket, and aftermarket agricultural kits include a 9-pin Deutsch lead for it. There are two versions:

On the 9-pin socket, pin A is ground, pin B is battery positive, pin C is CAN-H and pin D is CAN-L.

Older and smaller models can use a different plug, which is why CNH’s kit includes two harnesses. The socket’s location varies by series and model year. Look up “diagnostic socket” or “diagnostic connector” in your operator’s manual index, or ask the dealer for your serial number.

Aftermarket multi-brand tools

If you run more than one brand, a multi-brand tool may serve better than a CNH license as your Case IH or New Holland diagnostic tool.

Coverage varies by model and function, so check the vendor’s coverage list for your exact tractor before you buy. CNH’s store sells EST as 12-month licenses. Treat “lifetime” or bundled EST copies from other sellers with caution: they are not CNH’s license.

What an owner can do without the dealer

  1. Record the code exactly. Take a photo of the screen. Note the SPN (which component or parameter) and the FMI (the type of failure), the engine hours, and what the tractor was doing.
  2. Check the basics first. Battery condition, clean and tight grounds, fuses, and any connector that has been disturbed recently.
  3. Check the network at the 9-pin socket. With the key off and the modules asleep, measure across pins C and D. About 60 ohms is normal (two 120-ohm terminators). About 120 ohms points to a missing terminator or an open backbone. Confirm the values in your service manual.
  4. Look up the meaning. Use the full Case fault code reference, then follow the repair procedure in EST or the manual.
  5. Use the customer EST if you have it. Read and clear codes, watch live parameters while you test, and work from the schematics. Clear the code, then re-test under the same conditions.
  6. Call the dealer with your notes. A code list, hours and serial number make the call shorter. On supported connected machines, the dealer can also look remotely.

Where Eco Tractor Tune fits

On our dyno tuning service, we scan the machine first to make sure it is ready, then test it on the dyno before and after the tune. Any gain in power or economy depends on the machine and the work it does. We confirm it on the dyno or with a before-and-after fuel log.

To find your tractor in our catalog, browse Case IH models or New Holland models. For other brands, see our guides to John Deere diagnostic tools, Kubota diagnostic tools and AGCO EDT for Massey Ferguson, Fendt and Valtra.

Frequently asked questions

Can a farmer buy Case IH diagnostic software?

Yes. CNH sells a customer EST license through its online store. In October 2026 it cost US$300 (C$390) for one product series or US$1,500 (C$1,950) for all products, each for 12 months. The adapter kit is extra.

Does Case IH EST work on New Holland tractors?

EST is CNH’s tool for both brands, and the same license item is sold on both brand stores. A single-series license covers one product series, so if you run several series or both brands, compare it with the all-products license.

What adapter does CNH EST use?

CNH’s store sells the CNH VCI EST Adaptor Cable: a protocol adapter plus two harnesses. Many older and reseller kits use a DG Technologies DPA5. Check with your dealer that a used adapter suits your EST version.

Can the customer EST update software or calibrate?

The customer version reads, monitors and clears codes. Programming and calibrations are not on CNH’s customer feature list, so plan on the dealer for those, in the shop or through the Remote Service Tool.

Where is the diagnostic port on a Case IH tractor?

It varies by series and year. Many CNH machines have a round 9-pin Deutsch J1939 socket, and older or smaller models may differ. Check “diagnostic socket” in your operator’s manual index, or ask the dealer for your serial number.

What is the difference between EST and eTIM?

EST is the diagnostic software that connects to the tractor. eTIM is CNH’s electronic technical information: workshop manuals and service procedures, sold separately at US$2,495 (C$3,244) a year in October 2026.
